Cruising on a luxury yacht with Finder’s phase monitoring relays

One of Finder’s customers, a luxury yacht builder, required high quality and reliable line monitoring components for its main control panels.

Throughout this article, we will dive deeper and show how Finder’s phase monitoring relays provided a solution. Finder’s products for marine applications are specifically approved for the marine sector including Lloyd’s Register and RINA (according to Type). These will ensure high corrosion resistance, long electric life and great reliability in performance – essential requirements for marine applications.

The Need - what is a phase monitoring relay?

Cruising along incredible coastlines or seeing exotic countries with family and friends on a breath-taking luxury yacht is something that most of us have dreamed of. It should be a time of excitement and relaxation, as different locations are explored, and lifelong memories are made. However, without reliable, high-performance electrical components, this amazing dream could turn into a nightmare.

Marine applications demand reliable electrical systems that can withstand vibration, adverse temperatures and the possible exposure to a corrosive mix of water and salt. When at sea, it’s of even greater importance that optimal operating conditions are maintained, as failure to do so could result in expensive and permanent damage— especially as suitable spare parts may be difficult to obtain. Users of the yachts may have their holidays ruined, and the luxury yacht builder’s reputation could be tarnished. This is why phase monitoring relays are essential components within electrical systems.

One of Finder’s customers, a luxury yacht builder, required high quality and reliable line monitoring components for its main control panels.

This is because if there were an electrical supply failure onboard, the electricity needs to be transferred to the backup generator to keep operations running smoothly. Yacht builders require these specific high-performance components for control and monitoring of installations, especially with critical energy usage. Without these components, people in yachts might be left with no electrical power whilst out at sea. Finder’s Type 70.11.8.230.2022 phase monitoring relays with clear bright LED indication and positive safety logic signal contacts were therefore ideal.

Single-phase monitoring relays are designed to protect single-phase loads from unacceptable mains voltage fluctuations. They are equipped with a wide range of settings, including on-delay setting for applications such as refrigeration, compressor and air conditioning equipment protection to monitor possible electrical faults. They can significantly reduce hazardous situations for systems, while at the same time increasing the life span of electrical equipment.

The Solution - how does a phase monitoring relay work?

Installing Finder’s 70 Series monitoring relays for single phase allowed our customer to ensure performance and safety within its main motor operation, fire prevention systems, and the management of appliances in the galley. Any change in the supply voltage outside acceptable limits needs to be identified quickly. A high voltage brings risks of overheating, while too low a voltage may cause sluggish or mis-operation of vital equipment, resulting in an unpleasant experience for people on board. Finder’s 70 Series was the perfect fit to protect against this.

The Type 70.11, used by this particular customer, has three functions: Undervoltage, Overvoltage and Window mode, which can be easily adjusted by the selector and trimmer on the front face. The yacht’s electrical equipment gains increased safety with the ‘Positive Safety Logic’ feature, as the live contacts will open if the relay detects an error. Waiting for the supply to stabilise is vital, and the function ‘switch on lock out’ prevents multiple restarts of connected loads (such as compressors for refrigeration units). A failing or unstable generating system may cause overheating and damage, and onboard yachts this is of course an important aspect to avoid.

Finder’s products for marine applications are specifically approved for the marine sector including Lloyd’s Register and RINA (according to Type). These will ensure high corrosion resistance, long electric life and great reliability in performance – essential requirements for marine applications.

Finder also has a range of three-phase monitoring relays, useful for larger marine applications where three-phase voltages are present, with a range of functions including (according to type): Undervoltage, Overvoltage, Window mode, Phase Loss, Phase rotation, Asymmetry and Neutral loss. Detection of phase reversal is also very important in three-phase systems as this can result in motors rotating in the wrong direction, causing expensive damage.
